I am a psychiatrist and final year PhD student in psychiatry and Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Verona (UNIVR) (Verona, Italy) under the supervision of Professor Corrado Barbui. My research activities concern: global mental health; evaluation of efficacy and acceptability of psychotropic drugs and psychotherapies; evaluation and improvement of the production of scientific evidence through to its application in clinical practice (translational research). A major output of this research is the production of guidelines and indications for clinical policies consistent with the precepts of Evidence-Based Medicine and the shared decision-making process.
My expertise lies in the design and creation of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and clinical guidelines.
I have collaborated with Professor Barbui since 2011, working on the efficacy and acceptability of antidepressants and psychotropic agents in general. Professor Barbui was my Research Advisor when I discussed my thesis to become a physician (2012) and a psychiatrist (2018). I started my PhD program in clinical epidemiology at UNIVR in 2017. That same year I spent 6 months at McMaster University (Ontario – Canada) supervised by Professor Gordon Guyatt to acquire knowledge in research methodology and the GRADE method in particular. Having acquired sound training in the GRADE method, I was among the first researchers to apply it in an innovative type of review, termed “umbrella review”, developed to assess the credibility of evidence generated by meta-analyses. In 2019 I spent 6 months at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) (Amsterdam – the Netherlands) under the supervision of Professor Pim Cuijpers with whom I started a prolific collaboration on psychotherapy research. During my stay at VU I created a database that contains the data from all of the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the efficacy and acceptability of diverse types of psychotherapy for anxiety disorders. Since 2016 I have been actively involved in global mental health as a member of the Cochrane Global Mental Health (GMH) Network established in 2017 by Cochrane and based at the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health and Service Evaluation (WHO CC) at UNIVR, where I currently work. The GMH Network is coordinated by my mentor, Professor Barbui, Director of WHO CC. Through the GMH network, in 2019 I started collaboration with Professor Vikram Patel, with whom I co-authored a recent Lancet Psychiatry paper.
To date, I have published 37 journal articles, 33 of which have appeared in international peer-reviewed journals, including papers in the Lancet Psychiatry, the Lancet Global Health, the BMJ, BMC Medicine, and the Cochrane Library. I am actively involved in several international ongoing projects, including projects in collaboration with: the WHO; the European Union (Horizon 2020 scheme); McMaster University (Canada); Vrije Universiteit (Holland); the Italian Medicine Agency (Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco – AIFA), the Italian National Health Institute (Istituto Superiore di Sanità - ISS), and the Italian National Centre for Clinical Excellence (Centro Nazionale per l’Eccellenza Clinca – CNEC).

Research groups

The main research interests of the Unit include: (a) pharmaco-epidemiology, oriented to describe the beneficial and harmful effects of psychotropic drugs in ordinary practice; (b) randomized controlled trials, oriented to assess the efficacy and tolerability profile of psychotropic drugs in experimental conditions; (c) systematic reviews, oriented to summarize clinical trial findings using meta-analytical techniques.
