In 2019, while a PhD student, he was a research fellow at the Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) under the supervision of Professor Pim Cuijpers with whom he started a prolific collaboration on psychotherapy research. He has worked since 2018 as a guideline developer for the Italian National Health Institute (Istituto Superiore di Sanità) and in 2022 he provided methodological support for the update of the WHO mhGAP program. In the same year, he also led a project aimed at updating and reshaping the mental health section of the WHO Essential Medicine List, in coordination with Dr. Mark van Ommeren, head of the Mental Health Section of the WHO Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse (Geneva, Switzerland). Dr. Papola currently works in the research group of Prof. Vikram Patel, at the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine of Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts.
