Apprendimento e memoria Giuseppe Bertini
Studio del comportamento animale volto alla comprensione dei meccanismi dell'apprendimento e del consolidamento della memoria, sia in condizioni fisiologiche che in presenza di patologie del sistema nervoso centrale. Sono esplorate diverse modalità di memoria, fra cui la memoria spaziale, il riconoscimento di specifici oggetti, il riconoscimento di ambienti associati ad eventi avversivi.

Studio comportamentale ed elettrofisiologico degli stati di vigilanza (veglia attiva, veglia quieta, sonno a onde lente, sonno REM) condotto attraverso la registrazione cronica di potenziali elettroencefalografici ed elettromiografici, accompagnata dalla videoregistrazione continua. La ciclica alternanza degli stati è analizzata in condizioni fisiologiche e in presenza di patologie del sistema nervoso centrale o in funzione di manipolazioni sperimentali tese a elucidare il ruolo del sonno e della veglia nelle prestazioni cognitive, nella memoria, nella plasticità sinaptica.

Il problema riguardante il ruolo ed il peso relativo giocato dai fattori biologici ed ambientali nel determinare l’insorgenza delle psicosi e nel condizionarne il successivo decorso ed esito psico-sociale resta una questione ancora in gran parte irrisolta. Per questo, la Sezione di Psichiatria ha instituito il Laboratorio di Genetica Psichiatrica (coordinato dalla prof.ssa S. Tosato), che svolge progetti di ricerca mirati a valutare il ruolo predittivo delle caratteristiche biologiche ed ambientali (traumi infantili, eventi di vita stressanti, cannabis, complicanze ostetriche) sull’esito clinico e sociale delle malattie mentali. Dal 2010 è stata implementata la Biobanca Genetica per la Ricerca in Psichiatria per la raccolta e la conservazione di materiale biologico proveniente da pazienti affetti disturbi psichiatrici (psicosi, depressione), da familiari e da individui sani. L’obiettivo quello di condurre studi che, grazie a una precisa e puntuale caratterizzazione fenotipica, permettano di concorrere all’identificazione di fattori di natura biologica nel determinare lo sviluppo e il decorso della patologia psichiatrica.

In the adult animal, although their overall number is stable, the synapses can modify their efficacy in many ways, a property called "synapse plasticity".
